The Pont du Gard, one of the wonders of Antiquity, is the finest remaining example of an ancient aqueduct and was built almost 2000 years ago by the Romans. This architectural gem, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is in a beautiful, unspoilt, natural setting.

The Pont du Gard is the most grandiose part of the Roman aqueduct that carried water from a spring in Uzès, over 50 kilometers to the Roman city of Nîmes. The construction of the highest Roman bridge in the world, in the 1st centur AD, was an amazing architectural feat for the time.

The Pont du Gard site is a unique, preserved setting, where you can explore 2000 years of history in your own way and at your own pace. The Pont du Gard site is one immense playground for your exploration and enjoyment.

Enter the heart of the Roman world and see the secrets of the construction of the aqueduct bridge as you visit the Museum, view the film and follow a guided tour which brings you to the very top of the bridge where the water flowed to Nîmes in Roman times. Designed to stimulate our curiosity and questions, the Ludo space is a veritable field for play, interaction and discovery. With its active, playful approach, Ludo is designed for 5 to 12-year-olds in hands-on, educational fun. Observation, imagination and reflection are all called upon during this fascinating expedition! Walk and run through the 15 hectares of the different restored plots of land in the 'Memory of the Garrigue' walk, where you see all the richness of this Mediterranean countryside. Follow the layout of the aqueduct over land, to see the vestiges of this Roman engineering marvel, and walk along the riverbanks to enjoy the soft ripple of the river Gardon as it flows timelessly under the arches of the Pont du Gard. In the warm summer months, the wide banks are like beaches and are a refreshing stop.

In the summertime, as night falls, the bridge is lit up and turns into one giant screen with a fantastic sound and light show. Pure magic, to see every evening in July and August (see dates and times at www.pontdugard.fr ).

And not to be overlooked is the restaurant 'Les Terrasses' located on the right bank, which seats you in the shade of centuries-old plane trees. Les Terrasses offers a welcome, friendly and beautiful atmosphere and features fresh cuisine made from local products. (Reservation recommended by calling +33 (0)4 66 63 91 37)
